About CPD
Sonographers and CPD
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is education following completion of formal training. CPD provides sonographers with ongoing improvement and refinement of existing skills and knowledge throughout their careers. It is vital for ensuring competent and contemporary best practice is implemented by all sonographers.
Sonographers in Australia and New Zealand must meet prescribed CPD requirements in order to maintain their sonographer accreditation and registration.
- From 1 January 2017, sonographers accredited with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR) must accrue 60 CPD points per triennium. This applies to sonographers commencing a new triennium from 1 January 2017 onward
- Sonographers registered with the New Zealand Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB) must accrue 60 hours of CPD per triennium, with a minimum of 10 hours in any one year. Evidence must demonstrate a minimum of 35 hours of substantive CPD activities and 25 hours of general CPD activities over the relevant triennium.
Both ASAR and MRTB undertake annual audits to monitor sonographers' compliance with accreditation and recertification requirements.
